Brand new film’s writer and you can director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess games, to have mortal limits, between Johnny, their company (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Received), good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) spent some time working within gambling establishment and you can dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely regulated body language of love and possibility, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and smartly cocky images (and additionally his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle an invisible antique of category.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, as the an authorities inspector, together with up the get . As the patch observe a common trend, this new characterizations are fresh and the performances sufficient to overbalance. Dialog is terse and you may relevant, avoiding the psychological, phoney touching. Strange digital camera bases arrive once in a while to help you intensify desire and briefly arrest the interest. Solid teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling due to the fact director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand spanking new journalist and you can affiliate producer, in addition to aids in making this a mellow design.” [ 11 ]

Evelyn Keyes performs the good little lady which brings forth the fresh finest in him and you will Ellen Drew is the sleek and slinky vixen which becomes him into the jams. Thomas Gomez was fatty as the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does a special able tour because a tired police inspector exactly who finally closes the way it is.
